Dorie Nelson 1938-2008

I am riding in the LIVESTRONG challenge in memory of Dorie Nelson, my mother-in-law. In 2008, Dorie died from glioblastoma, a "rare" form of brain cancer that afflicts something like 5000 people in the US every year.

In addition to taking her life, the cancer threatened to take her dignity. Dorie was fortunate to be able to stay at home with amazing support of her daughters, Beth and Anne. I am happy that I could help my wife Beth support and care for her mom, and to be with her in her process of dying.

Dorie isn't the only person that I love that's been taken by cancer. My Grandpa Jack Sever died of spinal cancer in about 1997 after a long and painful illness.

Not long after Jack died, my Aunt Linda died of metastatic breast cancer leaving two beautiful daughters behind. She was in her early 40's-- much too young. Linda was probably the most vibrant and alive person I've ever known. At the time, I was too young and immature to appreciate the magnitude of the tragedy of losing Linda at her prime.

Since 2005, I've been a fan of the Eldon Nelson's blog: fatcyclist.com. I've been inspired and touched by Eldon's stories about the return of his wife Susan's cancer.

This year, Elden challenged his readers to participate in the LIVESTRONG challenge. I took the bait, and I look forward to being a part of Team Fat Cyclist: Fighting for Susan

Please join me in honoring Dorie and supporting Susan, Elden, and the Lance Armstrong Foundation's effort to eliminate cancer.

-Eric
